Just bought a Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme

Make sure the fan is like the picture, it should be infront of the heatsink and then blow through the fins.

If its sucking the air through the fins it could be sucking in from the sides of the heatsink and therefore interrupting the airflow path.

I my self had very great results with lapping a heatsink, so I would try it. Just go out and but some sand paper. Start with 100 grit then go up to 240, then 320, then 400, and then get some of the really fine water proof sandpaper around 500-700 grit and use that. Even if you do it by hand it looks extremely shiny.

And don't worry about the warranty, its not very hard to re seat a heat sink.

I think 100 grit is unneccesary, unless your base/heatspreader is seriously uneven. I started with some 600 grit, then 800, then 1200, then 2000. Remember, you are not looking for a mirror shine, you are looking for flatness, so don't use metal polish. And don't push down whilst lapping. Let the wait of your hand do the work.

Where the hell do you find 100 and up grit sand paper!
I have never seen above 700! Curse Home Depot!

And I decide to through in the 100, you never know when you might need it.

Is it me or is there an increasing amount of people who are complaining about the so-called Best HS out there?

Not complaining. My idle temps on the thermalright went down from 59C to 39C since I installed it. It has broken in and improved temps alot. I also mounted the fan so it is blowing through the heatsink and out the back.

You'll need to go to a specialist paint shop and look in the automotive section maybe (not sure about your countries set up) and look for Wet&Dry paper, it is used by body shops to finely sand paint finishes before respraying.
