ok so ya a freind has asked me to build him a pc for 600 usd so im gonna try and tackle this goal. i have aggreed to use some spare parts of mine such as a 7600gs and dvdrw drive and a 200gig sata hdd this is what i have came up with for the parts he needs could some one give me advice on this selection

case = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811167001

psu = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003

mobo = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813136038

cpu = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115030

ram = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134635 three gigs

and windows xp home as a OS he will be using it for gameing and what not and does not intend on overclocking anything so i figure this would be an ok setup

Forget the E6550 and get an E6750 - its only like $10 more. The E6600 has become so popular that its madly overpriced on Newegg and people will STILL buy it. Its funny because the E6750 is more powerful and costs like $50 less.

Don't get 2x1GB, get this 2GB DIMM. I think its about the same price. It leaves space to upgrade.

He's trying to build a budget gaming PC and the E6xxx range is too expensive and only leaves enough to buy a shitty 8600GT. The 5000+ X2 and 8800GS is a much better combo I think as the GPU is much more important than the CPU for gaming. And as for why the E6600 is more expensive, for a start, they are not made any more, and they remain the overclockers choice over the E6750 because of the more variable multiplier (6-9). The E6750 is (6-8) so demand for the E6600 is high.
And if he gets only a single 2GB stick, it will run in only single channel mode and not dual channel.

I saw that too, but got my E6600 for $100...

I still don't think 6-8 and 6-9's difference is worth $40. Plus, if you get the OEM versions, they're cheaper. (and since you're using aftermarket coolers, theres no point in spending on the stock coolers)

I've found the OEM E6750 for $176 and the OEM E6600 for $215.
And is the E2160 story really true? In that case, maybe he should consider doing that.

And single-channel vs. dual-channel performance has been proven to be rather negligible. And i'm quite sure there ARE 2GB DIMMs in existance that run in dual-channel.

The E2160 story is true, IF you know how to overclock. The Pentium Dual Cores are really fully fledged Core 2 Duos with only 1MB of L2 cache. They can reach 3.5GHz, but you need the right mobo and RAM.
If he's not an OC'ed, then the 5000+ X2 is still the best choice I think.
