I recently installed Windows server 2000 on an old IBM that i had laying around and put a 320Gig in it. The only problem is that i don't know how to really setup windows server and i don't know much about networking. I would like to use the server for backup and media streaming. I have looked at some toutorials on this sight but non of them cover media streaming & I dont know what would be best way for going about doing backups For the best speed and reliability. Any help is appreciated!

P.S. Eventually I would like to put all my storage in the server and use active directory and boot all of my machines off the server if you think that is reasonable. except for my home build which occasional Games.

Honestly, I would look into buying Windows Home server. It's based off of Server '03 and all the reqs are the same. Set one up for a work demo today, backup goes every day on every computer you install the connection software on, and has the native support to stream to media devices.

there are some specialist programs out there for streaming media (like real server).

you can't just install windows and start streaming.

as far as backup goes you can just create a shared folder on the server and store files there.
or you could get a program on the server that has scheduled backups and actually goes to your computer to get information and backs that up.
