what are PCI-E X1 slots on a motherboard for?

The PCI-E X1 slot is just a really small (about 3cm long) slot used for expansions. It is much better than PCI because it has a much larger bandwidth, but you can make smaller expansion cards with better stuff than PCI. I have a TV tuner that uses the PCI-E X1 slot.

On a personal note, the slots are a b***h to work with because they are so small. Especially with smaller cases and when all other expansion slots are full.

network cards, usb cards etc. Wouldn't be surprised if you would find a sound card that uses pci-e 1x.
Basically it's ment for small stuff, kind of like pci is used nowadays.

What can you put in a PCI-E slot? Just about anything (as long as it matches the slot form factor)
PCI-E x16 is mostly used for graphics cards. All of the modern day GPUs use this slot, such at the nVidia 8xxx and 9xxx series, as well as the ATi 3xxx series.
PCI-E x1 is pretty much the replacement standard of PCI.

For combining two or more hard drives into one, basically.
Set at RAID 0, if, say, you had two 500 GB hard drives, you could get 1 TB of storage.
The same setup with RAID 1, you would only have 500 GB storage, but the other hard drive would be a mirrored image of the other, so you have a constant backup of your data.
