Ok, I need a computer that can run Battlefield 2 perfectly smooth on full graphics... that's it, nothing else! I don't care if it has Windows XP or Vista. And I don't care what brand it is or if it has to be custom built.

Basically, What is the minimum price for a pc that can run bf2 perfectly smooth

Question: Does BF2 run better on Windows XP?

pretty much everything runs better on xp.
As for bf2, well it's an old game, you don't need a powerfull pc to run it.

I have
p4 3.0ghz
2gb ddr400
6800GT

and bf2 runs fine with full settings. (at least it used to, haven't played in about 2 years but I don't think they have made any new updates) Can't remember what my AA/AF settings were but I'm guessing they were off or low.

So pretty much anything that is better than my pc will do the trick.

You will be able to build your PC for cheaper if you go with XP, but you're going to need to make the switch to Vista at some point so why not now? A PC that can run B2 and Vista fine still isn't going to cost very much. I'm assuming your from the US, so I'll pick out some parts from Newegg.
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135069 This is socket AM2/AM2+ so it can support the new AMD quad core Phenoms should you wish to upgrade at a later date.
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103774 AMD is a must for a budget system. They offer so much more in this price range.
Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211165 2GB is the standard ATM and definitely in the "comfort zone" and when it's this cheap, why not?
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145132 I'm not sure how much storage you need change this to suit your needs.
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371006
Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814134039 It seems you have a 22" monitor judging by your sig so I recommend a card with 512MB of VRAM as this helps with the higher resolutions.
OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116196 I would recommend this over getting XP or else you'll only be forced to upgrade later.
Just choose any case and DVD drive you want just make sure the case is of ATX form factor, not uATX and the DVD drive uses a SATA interface.

I used to run an AMD 64 3500+ @ 2.5GHz, 1GB of RAM, and a 6600GT and BF2 ran pretty good on full settings. Not completely smooth off the start, so I would recommend a slightly better video card than what i was running.

The build I recommended would cost about $450 + the case and disk drive. So about $500.

haha. go for the AMD setup, but swap that CPU for a 5000+ i have a 5600+ and i wish i had gone for a 5000, this thing cant go any higher then 3.2GHz without blue screens
