my xp home edition has been slow lately when I turn it on a black screen appears after the loading screen for about 5 minutes then at the desktop the only thing that loads is the desktop image and the keyboard shortcuts don't work

xp home sp2
pentium 4
msi p4mam2-v mptherboard with integraed sound card
seagate 320 gb hard drive
2 gb ram
nvidia geforce 6600gt graphics card
1 dvd drive

used primarily for video editing and gaming

what could be the problem

Well, the processor you have is fairly old for one thing. But it sounds like it's time for a format. How long have you had that computer?

sounds like a virus to me. those specs are more than enough to run xp decently. formatting is always good though, and would fully fix all the problems, so id do that. try booting to safe mode and back up all the data then format

Boot into safe mode by repeatedly hitting F8 before Windows starts up.

Do you mean it's won't give you the option to boot into safe mode when you press F8 or it can't boot into safe mode?

it used to but since i got the new hard drive 5 monthes ago and reinstalled windows xp it wont let me

got it to safeboot but it disables the keyboard any idea how to fix this

In the control panel, there is an option to use an on-screen keyboard.
