hey all, im having stupid heating problems, ideling at 60-65 any activity at all boosts me into the 75+ range. dont even ask about gaming. Im sure its a combination of poor heatsink, but probably just as much a result of poor thermal compound application on my part. i used some wierd named 751s idontrememberthefuckwhat, but i researched it and it was suposidly the top thermal compound. anyways. its clearly apparent that i cannot use any larger heatsink than what ever size the faczory defualt is that comes with the q6600. Any help appreciated if you can tell me the measurement. Also do most new fan/heatsink combos come with thermal compound already applied?

What kind of case do you have? Is the fan on the heatsink cpu running? If the cpu fan is running, you may need to re apply some thermal on the heatsink and cpu. Make sure you do not use too much thermal on it. (Use Artic Silver 5, If you need it quick, Radio Shack, Office Depot and stuff sells it) Only need about 3 little drops the size of rice grains on the cpu, and then install the heatsink on the cpu. Make sure the stock heatink is properly installed, it can be a little tricky sometimes. Before you reapply the thermal make sure you clean the other thermal stuff off there completely. Also what program are you using to monitor the temps? Try PC Wizard 2008.

Okay, I'd definitely reapply the thermal compound, and maybe just go right ahead and get a new heatsink.

Buy:
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (works great)

Arctic Silver thermal remover kit (works great as well)

When you put on the thermal compound use like 2 tiny drops, and spread with an old credit card or something of the likes.

If you want to get a new heatsink as well, I highly recommend this Zalman:

I don't think the Zalman will fit in his case, he stated that he has no room in his case for a bigger heatsink. The stock should work fine as long he's not using it for overclocking.

im using a coolermaster case. i had overheating issues from day one. using a 965p-ds3 gigabyte board that came with decent hoardware monitoring software. thanks for the advice so far guys. i was planning on going with the silver. bump if anyone knows the size of the stock q6600 heatsink/fan combo. and yes, my fan is working

Can you elaborate more on this? Why don't you think you can mount a larger HSF? What model case do you have?

i was actually looking at this heatsink, however the vent on the side of my case has a port on the inside on the side of the case that comes down with a funnel just about right over the heatsink/fan. i was thinking that this type of heatsink might not get proper airflow if i did not use the flat mounted style fan? but i guess i could always remove the port, what do you guys think?

its not the case size, its the arangement of my motherbord. there are plugs, and another heatsink looking thing on the board that are practically right next to the edges of the heatsink
