Well you guys that know me know that I write really long posts... ...have fun with this one...lol
Ok guys…kind of an interesting build here..not one that is seen a whole lot on here…once in a great while but not too often….Anyway, the low down is that I need to give a co-worker a quote on building him a new machine…he will be doing NO gaming and I'm assuming no video or picture editing. Someone else quoted him with a 300-400 dollar price range but I don't see how that's humanly possible…400 sure, but between 300 and 400..no way…I'm assuming this other guy was planning on a Pentium or a slower AMD..but there's no way you are hitting 300 without THE cheapest crappiest parts…
So here's what I've come up with so far…I just need some help choosing some stuff to give him a better quote. I'll mark what I think would be best for each thing…
Cases (generally if I would go with an AMD, I would get a case with at least two or more fans so keep that in mind…otherwise Intels run pretty cool on just one or 2 fans)
$57 Linkworld
$61 Rosewill
*$63 Raidmax
*$66 Xion
$66 NZXT
He's only going to need a 400-450W PSU…he won't have many peripherals…just one hdd and one dvd and a small vid card…so any of these should be fine….but let me know what one seems best fit for an intel or amd machine
Alright now here are the rest of shenanigans:
If I would go Intel, I was looking at these MOBOs:
$81 Nvidia 650i
$66 ECS intel p35
*$66 nvidia 650
CPU:
…I'm on a budget and about the only thing in the price point is the core 2 duo E6550 for $170…I just don't think a Pentium would do it for this build…not quite powerful enough for multitasking and can tend to run a bit hotter of course than the core 2 duos…
Now to the AMD hoopla:
MOBOs:
$77 580x crossfire
*$66 nvidia 520 this one has an 8 pin cpu connector..what's up with that?..is that even compatible with a 4 pin??..otherwise this one looks like the best bet here…
$86 amd690
CPU(s):
$140 5600 and if this isn't even comparable to a E6550…like if it's WAY worse…then it's a no go, I'll just spend the extra 30 bucks in the budget for the core 2…not worth the performance loss…but I don't want to start any fanboy wars here..I'm being realistic..this machine will NOT be overclocked…I need the best performance for my money out of the box and haven't built a midrange PC before, just higher end stuff..so let me know on this as well…
Okay, now guys, let me know if there is a motherboard that has DECENT onboard video that would be EQUAL or BETTER than the following graphics cards…I know the last amd board I listed has onboard vid, but IDK if it will beat a cheapo GPU…if I can save ten bucks here and there and still have it running decent that's great…remember he'll be doing no gaming!!!!!...at ALL!
30 bucks is the highest I definitely want to spend on a GPU...Everything I find on the net points to the ATI card winning over the 7200gs..just need a conformation on this…pretty final on this as long as there isn't, like I said, a mobo with better onboard graphics…
$33 nvidia 7200gs gddr2 256mb
$30 ATI x1650pro gddr2 256mb
And then the other usuals
Here's the RAM:
$39 Patriot 4-4-4-12
*$28 Patriot 5-5-5-12
HDD:
*$70 seagate 250gb pretty sure he won't need anything bigger than 250…might as well save 15 bucks
$85 seagate 320gb
DVD:

Well let me know what you think about all this guys….thanks a ton!!
