Computer Slow

I have a computer that is god dam slow.
20 mins to boot up.
It is windows xp sp1 (spare computer), how long will it take to defrag.

I cant it has loads of backups on it.

i dont knows about you 500gb of backups each backup around 9Gb
that will take years.

Get an external hard drive, set up a wired connection, and back up everything. Leave the computer alone for a day..that should be enough time for a backup.

Then reformat. You'll be fine as cryman is suggesting.

If time is an issue and money isn't, get a new hard drive and do a fresh XP install, then use your old HD as an external storage.
