Is an SD card or a USB thumb drive more reliable?

I need to backup files on my laptop I create when I am on the go, until I get home and can backup to my network hard drive. I am using a 1GB USB thumb drive right now. But a 1GB SD card would be a lot smaller and it wouldn't stick out from the side of the laptop because I have a built in card reader. But are they less reliable/more prone to failure?

They shouldn't be no, as they use the same kind of technology. You'll just have to make sure, since its small, you don't lose it by dropping it, etc.
You should always leave backups just incase

Well not all computers have a SD card slot, but most or all have a USB drive.
