Help! Won't Log-In

I have this laptop I've been using for a while. Yesterday when I turned it on, it did it's usual thing right after entering my username and password .... but right after saying "Loading your settings..." and then it another window comes up and said "Closing network connection then said Saving your settings..". It keeps looping back to the Ctrl-Alt-Del window login. Don't know what to do. Please help, don't what else to do. I was thinking of reformatting the whole computer but I have important files on this laptop.

I've only seen this as a result of a trojan (I think...) Can you get into safe mode and run a virus scan?

It won't even let me login in the safe mode environment
