I installed Windows XP pro 32-bit(i think) onto my new pc. My new pc has 4gb of ram and i heard for it to recognize all 4gb you need 64bit. How do i check if my windows is 64 or 32 bit? If it is 32 bit is there any way to upgrade to 64 bit without losing the files?

You can't upgrade 32 bit to 64 bit.

why didnt you get 64bit vista .
xp is starting to get old. and there are no compatibility issues with vista.
especially now that sp1 is coming out
