I want to use a decent registry cleaner. Is CCleaner enough? I used to use a downloaded version of Registry Cleaner. Is there anything else I could use? A free program?

EasyCleaner I find to be a really nice free cleaner, which cleans the registry/temps, etc. It isn't updates anymore, but it doesn't really need to be.
Like CCleaner, you do have to be slightly careful, but I believe its less likely to mess your system up, doing the wrong thing.

I didn't say to anyone that they had, but its pretty unforgiving

Theres Auslogics Registry cleaner. it works great and creates a restore point and really easy to use. thats what i use.

yea, doing stuff like cleaning ur registry doesnt really give a significant performance boost, but you could do it if you want.

It does make things load faster actually, depending on how much of a mess it actually is. You may have tonnes of registry keys that don't lead to anywhere, start up programs that no longer are needed but are still listed, etc
