Through most of the benchmark's I've found, the 3870 will beat or loose by a slight. However when anti aliasing is applied at 2xx, it seems that the 3870 will fall short compared to the 8800gt. Strange thing is, on paper the 3870 will match or beat the 8800 gt. however the 8800GT still beats the 3870.Here's the comparison How does this happen?

Does the driver for each graphic card have to do with the superior performance of the GT?
Does the memory interface have anything to do with AA making the 3870 lag?

Seems like the 8800GT for now is still better

well yes the 8800 gt is proven better in benchmarks, but I read that the 3870 over clocks like none other. Plus those can be placed in a 4xGPU pattern whereas the 8800 GT is limited to 3. Not to mention the 3870 is using a smaller, thus newer GPU and GDDR4 as memory. I just can't understand why the 8800Gt is so much better except for driver or the memory interface.

Does anyone one have insight on the situation?

Well finally I found the defining factor; Shader speeds. the 3870 has a shader speed of 775 MHz and the 8800GT is 1500 MHz. Why does ATI keep making epic cards and cheaping out in key areas of it, thus making it crap?

ok . but 8800's are old news .
just wait till 9 series come out . then we will play the benchmark game

then would 2x 9000's be like what 2x 8800gt's are doing? thats only making more smaller GPU's to divide the load, instead of making a truly powerful card.
