You mean my old Compaq with a 3gb hd and 64 mb of ram isn't future proof? Lol. Keep your current card. DirectX10 is nice to have when you buy a new card, but don't force the transition.
As you said it probably won't be shipped with retail computers as a standard for at least another year. And by that point prices will have dropped significantly, and the 9 series will be out. Thus allowing you to pay a but-load less for that coveted 8800.
