oem vs retail

OEM basically means it usually doesn't come with a retail box, no cables (in most cases) and, well, thats about it. Tends to be a lot cheaper.

OEM only includes the object itself, it doesn't include any extras or a fancy box etc, just the bare minimum. Retail is what is sold on the high street.
EDIT: I see Kage beat me to it.

^what they said
if you get a cpu, definatly go for a OEM and get a seprate(and better) cpu cooler

Some of the retail stuff is only like a couple of $s more than the OEM stuff and probably worth it for the extras that are included.

Things like cpu's, gpu's and motherboards I like to buy the retail version since it will come with the extras that you will need.

But stuff like dvd drives and hard drives I buy OEM versions since I can get my own burning software for dvd drives, and you don't really need anything but a cable for hard drives and the motherboard will come with all the cables you will need for the hd.
