AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3.0GHz) OR Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz

Yeah... those AMD CPUs are really nice for budget builds though. Thanks to AMD, a gaming system of about $500 worth of parts can be had.
 
The Q6600 is made very affordable now. I got mine for £160, $280 on Newegg I think. The Phenoms are even cheaper.
 
It really depends on his budget here guys. If it were me, I'd just get a C2D and put another $100 toward a video card. I know the quads are nice but even my cheapo 4600 can run today's games fine.
