Hey there, for a while now I have been wanting to install the Linux operating system. But I don't have very much knowledge about it. Can any one guide me though what I should do and what I shouldn't. Which Linux to install, do I need to download any special drivers for my computer will function correctly after installing it? Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks guys.

Also, Lets say I wanted to download a simple program from a torrent like Adobe Photoshop. Does the Install shield have to be for Linux? Or will it install normally. Thanks for the help again guys.

It is great that you want to install linux. :) For a beginner I would recommend that you go with something easy to install and step up like Ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com This has the best forum of pure geniuses and others that know everything about the OS, as well as other great documentation. Another reason that you might like it is that it is very similar to window is it's desktop set up.

As for your other question about Photoshop. Photoshop hasn't been ported to linux yet, There are many other free programs that you can get from places like http://www.Sourceforge.net. There are ways to run Photoshop, but they are with emulators like wine and crossover. There isn't an Install shield for linux per say. Ubuntu has its own software that acts like Install shield.

I hope that this answers some of your questions, if you have any more just ask and i will try to help as best I can.

Cheers!

Thank you this is just what I needed. Another question. I was thinking of putting a normal harddrive into my computer and installing Linux on there, should work right? My logic is just when the computer boots up it would ask me which to run.

Yes, that is how it works. Linux has a program called GRUB. This is what comes up at the very beginning, and if you have more than one OS say Ubuntu and XP it asks you which one you want to start.

Glad I could answer your questions.

Cheers!

Hi guys, so now I have a distro of Linux but now i need to make a partition on my hard drive for it any one know how to do it correctly? Sorry im a newb yes :D

Great that you got a distro. Which one did you get? As for your question about how to set up a partition, when you run the installer there should be an option to use the whole hdd or to create a new partition. If you decided on Ubuntu, then there are user created videos on installing the OS. Check out this page for more help. http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/

If it is a different distro then check on their website and see what they have for documentation.

Cheers!

Currently running the ubuntu distro :D very Happy with it. Thanks everyone for helping me set this up. I have much to learn about Linux as of now :D but looks like a positive step :)
