I play elder scrolls 4 on my PC specs:

1.9 Ghz AMD Dual core
2 GB RAM 800 mhz
630 Watt PSU
8400 GS XFX 512 Video memory

and i was wonder ing if about a 20 FPS rate at low is right?
I can play it on low or high and it plays fine until you actually have to fight soe thing (generally more than 2) and the computer freezes. I was wondering if there is any way to do the following:

1. Use CPU thermal paste on a GPU heatsink
2. If upgradeing to a 8500 GT woyuld improve gaming quality
3. simply adding a spot fan to the CPU and GPU and seeing if i can get some cooler temps

before i pulled board out:

CPU 49 c idle 51 c gaming

after i pulled board out:

CPU 49 idle 55/54 gaming

just wondering if it had something to do with the new PSU, removal of board or any tampering with parts,

-thanks

That sounds about right for that video card. If you are going to replace that video card, I would go for this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130291 or get a 8800GT if it's not far out of your price range.

Also those temps should be just fine, but you can just make sure the wires are not in the way of airflow inside the case. It's possible you could have moved some wires in the way when you did some changes to your computer. But the temps you have right now are not to worry about.

I agree, I'd say your video card is holding you back. Possibly the CPU as well. The 8400GS is a pretty weak card.

Those temps are fine though.

Yeah, it's your video card that's causing the freezes, it just can't keep up. If you want a new video card that will play TES well then don't get the 8600GTS that Jason recommended, get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103049
if your budget is under $200, or this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318 great brand/http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814122044
The first 8800GT I linked to is the 512MB version and the second is the 256MB. If you can't afford the 512 then the 256 will do fine, but there's not much difference between the two. The 3850 is a great value card that destroys the 8600GTS which is actually more expensive.

thats the processor i would get, stock you only get 200mhz better, but this card can be overclocked to 2.8ghz per core with stock cooling very easily w/o any voltage changes or anything, its the best bang for your buck

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150230

that is the graphics card i would recommend, i have an XXX version of this card (just slightly higher clocks) and it runs COD4 on medium high settings with 60-100 fps at 1024x768, its a great budget card

yeah its DEF that processor, i bet that it isent even at min requirments? vid card should be alright

well its dual core so its a little more than ahead of minimum...

Thanks you guys for all the links the posts on the 4800+ AMD and the Nvidia 8800 and 8600 gt look nice thanks for the tips!:D

Kind of upset i spent 70 on that card and hoped I could get by, there is a 8600 GT XFX 500 mhz core clock and 51 VDDR2 RAM, and i was thinisng since it had double pipeline capacities, 8 gb to a 16 Gb is that a fair price for around 120-140 or what price would you recommend for a card like that I am running XP so only DX9 for me.......

Oh and the speed fan temps say that one core is at 54 c and the other is 12c? is it because the second isn't bieng used as much or what?

is it ok to use thermal paste on the GPU and t seems to be a time thing it seems like in about 10 -30 minutes of anything it freezes any ideas.

and finally I just have one more question:
I bought(traded) an Os disk off a friend who said the computer he had it on died and he just wanted to get rid of it, i went to his house and saw the computer up and running, so i think he is lying, I am using the same OS, (XP) on this computer is this legal, i own 2 Os keys (one not in use) and I just want to be safe.
