I can't tell you what the correct pins for the jumper to be on. There should be a little diagram on the drive label that shows the proper location.

yeah well it was the master on my other computer so it should be the same on this one...would setting it to cable select have any effect do u think?

Nope, it shouldn't. You should try running the drive utility to see if your drive is still good.

Try downloading and running Memtest86+ so that we may rule out faulty memory too.

but I can't get into windows because that is the whole problem I am having so how do I do that? i can't

Those programs will run from either a floppy disk or bootable CD. They do not need an OS to be run.

so I just burn them to a CD-R and then boot from CD and thats it? I will try that tomorrow after work and post the results on here about 12 midnight tomorrow...frickin holidays 10 hour days blow...no time to work on important stuff and thanks for all ur help rooster

Yup, that's pretty much it. There are instructions on the websites that explain how to burn them to CD.
