mom's pc isn't quite up to xp and i have to rebuild in. i can reuse the power supply, case, and HDD's. was wondering if it's possible to by a mobo, CPU, and ram for around $150 that would be sufficient for someone who surfs the web and listens to music. also i want to hear some oppions on whether to go with AMD or intel for the price. i know you can get a 4200+ x2 from AMD but i'm not familiar with intel's line up.

Absolutely. Since it's going to be a basic system, I'm going to recommend a very nice AMD build. I just can't see why you would need to go with Intel. AMD is perfect and they're highly stable, fast, and reliable. If you have the money to spend, the new Intel CPUs are a pleasure to have. But most of them are priced fairly high compared to AMD CPUs. Plus, your mom doesn't need anything fancy and expensive to surf the Net and watching movies, music, etc.

SO here you go. THis is very sufficient. As long as you have enough RAM, this system is a monster. Way to go mom:

Board does not have onboard video, and since it is ATX it probably will not fit in the computer case that his mom has, assuming it is mATX.

In that case, I would just throw in a cheapy video card for that PCI-express x16 slot. He'll end up paying a bit more than what his budget calls for (aren't moms worth it?), but that's a hot system and it's worth every dollar. Biostar makes one of the better motherboards and for that cost, it's a great deal. The Brisbane core is low energy consumption which is good. I highly doubt she will OC it , but it's nice to have a system that has future potential and headroom. The G.Skill RAM I picked out are fast. For the price, it is steal to get RAM of that quality.

i apollogize for the sig. got some parts together. same mobo as juice suggested, amd athlon 4000+ 64 2.6 ghz, and 2 gbz kingston 667mhz ddr2 for a total of around $150. have to thank juice for the mobo tip because all of the others for AM2 socket seem to get really bad reviews. thanks for the help!
