I am formating an old laptop for my friend, and I am going to put linux on it I think. It has windows 98 currently. Like 220mbs of Ram and an 8gb harddrive. idk what kind of processor. Which version of linux would be good? He will prolly just use it for Word processing and stuff.

Sidenote, does windows 98 support jumpdrives? Cause it wont recognize his.

try dam small linux as you can run it from a cd to see how well it runs then install it

and you need to install drivers for win 98 and jumpdrives should be on internet or cd

Hmm, I tried xubuntu, but it loads up, than something about the bios fail the cutoff age of 2000. And it loads a couple more things, than just displays a black screen with a blue stripe on one side, a bit wierd. I did boot up dsl, but didnt install it, I didnt like it. What else could I try?

I would say Ubuntu, but you already tried it... Puppy might work. http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/index.php <that's a helpful site to chose distros. Too bad it's down right now. I decided to post the link in case it comes back up anytime soon. http://www.linux.org/ <try that and search through a million different distros...

I have tried PCLinuxOS and Freespire and I can tell you that they don't work on anything less than 700MHz, 256MB.

Win 98 supports jump drives, but you have to install the driver that probably didn't come with the jump drive...lol. d/l it from the net if there is one. My jump drive works on Win 98 once the driver is installed.
