hooking up a laptop to a TV

I have an akai lct2060 lcd tv and when I connect it and enable it to be my default desktop from my laptop, the resolution is 1024x768 or something like that and everything is hard to see, even from a distance. I want to know how to change the resolution because Im sure I can get good enough quality to be able to clearly see whats on the screen...ive tried to change it in properties, but my laptop thinks its a monitor that only can go up to 1024x768. my laptop can go 1280x800 but cant even output that to my tv.

what connection are you using ?

s-video
vga

i had that problem using svideo

solved it my using a vga cable and it allowed for more settings (resolutions)

I was using the svideo to svideo. vga sounds good. all this time I thought it was my tv. another trip to radio shack I guess...

well TBH s-video is just terrible connection for text and computer signals,

i run my laptop through my tele everynight and my res is set to 800 by 600 and i can just bout see this text but i only use it for watching films and for films the picture is perfect so i dont have much problems

Also,Playing emulators on a TV Screen with a gamepad is pretty sweet too
