you did restart after installing SP2 didnt you? if not then do so and try to do it again, it should work.

Assuming you didn't do the "quick format" that is normal. Even on 80GB drives, it takes forever. Quick format is good enough for me.

o yeah, I didn't do the quick format; is there any gains to not doing the quick formatting

not when the HDD has never been written on before. when you dont do quick then it will erase everything manually, quick just tells the HDD that you can write over existing data.
