you spend a couple months here, and other computer forums, ask lost of questions and such, i bet you could pass an A+ test w\o going to college, im pretty sure i could, and i have never had any computer classes other than the basic "how to open a word document" classes.

Right now I am studying for A+ Certification. My gf got me a book called "All In One CompTIA A+ Certification"

Its really good so far. Comes with everything you need to pass the Certification Exams.

You should check it out at Barnes & Noble, or just google it.

You always have to do them in a testing center. Exam's combined are roughly 300$

There are test centers all over the U.S. You pay for your exams and take your exams at a test center near you, pass the exams, get your certification!
