you should be fine so long as there is some still there, but if you notice it running too hot then you might need to put some on

It's silicon stuff that came with the cooler (it's an OCZ Vendetta) silicon based but it should be fine until I get some better stuff.

I've never had a problem mounting my stock heatsink. I don't see why so many people complain about them.

I second that its not rocket science. Push till it snaps into place. Give a tug if it doesn't move your good to go. Whats so hard about that?

yep, even the best thermal compound out there is pretty cheap, for example...
