I picked out a laptop for my aunt today and decided to go with an HP that has a 1.9ghz AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, because one for the same price had a Core 2 Duo that ran at only 1.5ghz. Did I make a good decision? Is the Core 2 Duo that much better than the AMD?

Yes, it was an ok decision. Nothing wrong with a Turion 64 X2 mobile CPU because it's designed for lower power consumptions in laptops too. It's clocked higher for the same price so it's a good deal. Too bad it can't be any cheaper though.

So are Intel Core 2 Duos much better than AMD Turion 64 X2s? I noticed that the AMD only has 1mb of L2 cache but the FSB runs at double the speed of the Core 2 Duo's FSB.

I remember reading somewhere that the Core 2's get longer battery life. Either way, it wasn't a bad decision. Any performance difference would be negligible, unless your aunt uses CPU-intensive programs.
