Buying a new PC

OK, I've looked at those sites and the guides and you're right, it is pretty simple. If I put these components together would anything happen? Also is the memory i've selected dual channel? and what does CL5 CL4 mean? sorry for all the questions.
Here are my components:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131950- CPU. Is it worth getting the energy efficient version of the Q6600? as it is said to be more overclockable, but it comes without the heatsink and fan.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125082 - Motherboard

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126610- Case + PCU 500W. will this be enough?

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/98710- Memory

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129527- DVD Drive

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228- Hard drive

I couldn't find a 64bit OS on ebuyer but I plan on getting Vista Home Premium 64bit as will probably add more memory later on.

Not bad but NEVER Get that Power Supply always get a branded one yes they are expensive then the unbranded ones but they are also safer. Unbranded Power Supply are likely to blow and not produce their rated power that they claim to produce and if it blows as its a cheap one its unlikely to have any protection for your components which means if it goes it will likely take the rest of the componets with it! So always get a branded PSU like: Hiper / Corsair / Antec etc. I'd get atleast 550W or more maybe 600W to insure you won't be limited to have far you can overclock.

You can use that case though if you want, but I prefer full towers, have a look at this case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/118268

As you are only using 2gb RAM don't get Vista 64th just get 32bit, Vista 32bit is a hell of a lot more stable and has better chance of working with your hardware and software then the 64bit version would. Hard drive is just personal preference really but I prefer the Samsung over the Western Digital. Yes it is worth getting the Core 2 Qaud energy efficent version of the processor as it runs less power to start with and does allow more overcloking potentional.

Two things you have missed A CPU cooler and Graphics Card. For CPU cooler the one in the link I posted about is one of the best and works with that processor (Intel Core 2 Qaud Q66000) a treat. As for the Graphics card get the one I mentioned (when it comes in stock) as its one of the best around right now and beats the 8800GTS.

I agree, I'm going to get the 8800gt but it's not currently in stock so couldn't add it to the basket. .Will a midi tower still be big enough for everything I need though? and if I got vista 32bit now could I upgrade to 64bit later?

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127439 Is this cooler OK or do you still definatly recommend the thermalright one? And finally is the memory I selected earlier dual channel and what is CL4 or CL5?
Thanks for your help

I don't know anything about that cooler so cannot comment on it but if yo want to go cheaper get thiis: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/105994 It's very well recommened by several people and is a popular choice performs good too and a cheap price.

I don't know much about memory but what you selected looks ok, althoguh the best mmory manufactuors I see recommend these days are Crucial and Gell. Don't know about Gell but with Crucial you can order memory from their website ether get this: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=0AB23849A5CA7304 or a little more expensive but may be a little better get this: http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=E66A284FA5CA7304

If you plan to overclock definately get Crucial memory as they overclock very well.

Yes you could get 32bit and upgrade to 64bit later when you have over 2gb memory.

OK. I'm getting pretty close to the final package I think, so here it is:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131823 - CPU

http:///www.ebuyer.com/product/125082 - M/B

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228 - HD

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/123067 - OS. 64bit, sorry Webhead:p

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/105994 - CPU Cooler

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/121072 - Case, I also bought another 120mm fan to go with it. TBH, I don't see the point in getting a flash case, sure they may be a bit quieter and nicer to the eye but it's only a case and as long as it's big enough for all the hardware and has reasonable ventilation, it's fine for me.

http:///www.ebuyer.com/product/132563 - PCU

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134393 - Graphics card. Not available at the moment though.

Now the only thing I need now is the right memory for the rest of my components, I think I'll get a 800mhz 2gb set but what latency CL5 or CL4.

Please could some experts waste 5mins of their life checking my list and making sure that once I put it all together it will actually work. Thanks alot.

links for motherboard and PSU don't work. Everything else looks ok though, if you go with vista 64bit get 4gb RAM as thats one of the main reasons people use Vista 64bit for. Lower latercy RAM I think means it overclocks better but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: Overclockers are better than Ebuyer for RAM cheaper and much more selection of brands, heres one example this is very good memory 4gb expensive but it is 4gb and a very good manufactuor: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-069-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

EDIT 2: Or you can get two sets of these from the same company see the reviews too: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

For the motherboard get the P5K it uses the newer P35 chipset and will be more future proof for you, any of these P5K'S should be ok: http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?qfind=p5k but the best ones are the standard P5K or the P5K-E.

Definately get 4GB RAM, you'll be glad you did with Vista 64bit trust me.

EDIT: For the power supply the one you selected isn't bad but if you can afford it I'd still recommend the one I posted earlier http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114941 it's modular too so you can plug the cables in you need and leave the others you don't need out, instead of the regular powersupplies that have all the cables attached, this makes it a lot neater instead your case and could potentially help airflow.

You can read a review of it here: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=510

Okay, getting a PK5 M/B. But for the memory, 2 sets of 2x1gb seem to be alot cheaper than the 2x2gb sets. Is it really necessary to get the 2x2gb types and please could someone give me a definitive answer on cl4 and cl5. Thanks again Webhead

Well done on getting a P5K motherboard, yeah its strange 2 sets of 2x1gb is cheaper then 2x2gb I'll look further and see if they are any difference but get 2x 2gb, also I just looked on wikipedia and I was right lower latercy (CL) does mean faster and more overclockable RAM, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAS_latency

Glad to help you, despite my wrong understanding of Vista 64bit I hope you have found the infomation I have given you helpful, and if you have any further questions I'll do my best to answer them.
