Does microsoft have a monopoly?

Well, there was a big lawsuit on that years ago. Companies like Netscape, Firefox, Opera, etc. says that it wasn't fair how Microsoft integrated their OS with IE, making it so consumers won't need another web browser (which could put them out of business). Well the case was dropped and a new law regarding that was created for monopoly reason. Thanks a lot Microsoft.

lol Microsoft has every right to put their own web browser with their own operating system. If mozilla and Netscape want people to use their web browsers put it on cd and give it out for free in computer stores or something.

I like that Microsoft owns a lot of the market share. That way my linux stays virus free. The only downfall is games. I prefer console games anyway.

This was back in the Windows 98 days when some of you were still in elementary school, lol. Yes, I'm that old.

AOL's Netscape sues Microsoft

"The Justice Department and 20 states filed their antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in May 1998, but only 19 states pursued the case. One more state dropped out last year.

The suit alleged that through a variety of business tactics--exclusive contracts and integration of the Internet Explorer browser with Windows 98, among others--Microsoft used its monopoly power to squash Netscape.

The government argued that Microsoft believed Netscape could develop into middleware that could eventually replace Windows. The government also asserted that Microsoft used anti-competitive means to preserve its monopoly. These arguments and evidence introduced by the government resounded with Jackson, who presided over the trial.

"Through its conduct toward Netscape, IBM, Compaq, Intel, and others, Microsoft has demonstrated that it will use its prodigious market power and immense profits to harm any firm that insists on pursuing initiatives that could intensify competition against one of Microsoft's core products," Jackson wrote in his findings of fact in November 1999.

Jackson concluded that Microsoft's actions prevented consumers from having more choices and innovations. "Many of the tactics Microsoft employed have also harmed consumers indirectly by unjustifiably distorting competition," he found.

Although lawyers have filed more than 100 private lawsuits on behalf of consumers, the government's case actually does a better job bolstering civil lawsuits brought by competitors.

Gray estimated damages could be anywhere "from the hundreds of millions to the billions of dollars."

In the quarter ended Dec. 31, Microsoft set aside $660 million to cover the potential cost of settling the class-action suits pending against the company. Still, Microsoft has nearly $40 billion in cash.

While the Netscape lawsuit "piggybacks on the findings of fact and conclusions of law the government spent years determining," the goal is much broader, Lande said. "In some ways, they want to retry the whole and get at the things the government left out.”

In the June 2001 appeals court decision, seven judges threw out Jackson's order that would have broken Microsoft in two. The court also sent back to retrial the allegation that Microsoft had illegally tied--or integrated--its Web browser with the operating system. The Justice Department decided not pursue either matter. The court also dismissed a claim Microsoft illegally tried to extend its monopoly to the browser market."

Microsoft does have a monopoly in the respect that they have a extremely large market share but if people don't like it then don't use there products. Its a simple as that.

The fact is that they provide good software which is why poeple use it.

The ONLY thing that squashed Netscape was their buggy, bloated, POS web browser. Even AOL gave up on it in favor of IE for a time.

Yeah microsoft has a monopoly but who cares?

Well, I wouldn't say a monopoly, but they have a dominating control over the software industry. It's only because Apple and other companies aren't creating software up to par with Microsoft. That's why so many people come flocking to Microsoft whenever they need an OS.

I remember saying something similar to this in another thread, as it happens. Microsoft make fantastic software which is not always aimed at the end user; a lot of their really good software tends to be more enterprise, corporate and network based such as Windows Server, SQL Server, Visual Studio, IIS, etc. For an IT professional there really is no better alternative, despite what people say; most Linux and UNIX based tools are generally esoteric, outdated, command-driven buggy wastes of time and UNIX, at its core, is held together with blu-tack and is an accident waiting to happen. Add to that the horrendous compatibility issues and implementation problems and you will easily see Microsoft as the better solution when, or if, you work with IT professionally.

People tend to overlook things like that. They think that, because it is Microsoft, that it is automatically evil. Apple are absolutely no better either, they are also a business and their ultimate aim is to make as much money as they possibly can. Some people think Linux is the best option out of all. Well, just try configuring it to work on the backend to work with Microsoft Windows, it is horrendous. Microsoft's products are designed to integrate with each other and that is what they do best.

People call it a monopoly because they're just PMS'ing over the fact that Microsoft has been one of the most, if not THE most successful software companies in the world. They offer services and products just like any other company.

If you don't like Microsoft, don't buy their products. That's why there are other competitors or even Open Source. Don't want to buy XP or Vista? Use Linux. Don't have the money for Office 2007? Download Open Office.

I hate it when people bitch and whine about Microsoft being a monopoly and all that. If you don't like Microsoft and their services/products then don't use it! It's your own damn fault if you're too ignorant to find an alternative. People like that can go suck on it.
