Any advantage to dual core if not running 2 apps?

Is there any advantage to running a dual core processor if you are not running more that one application at a time? For example, would I see any performance gain by running an Intel Core 2 Duo at 3Ghz over my Intel Pentium 4 at 3Ghz if I don't run more than one program at a time?

Yes the new processors (Dual, Quad..etc) Operate faster. Like u sad, take Duo at 3Ghz & Intel Pentium 4 at 3Ghz, Duo will perform faster, its just better technology man.

You'll never be running only 1 app though.

Press Control Alt Delete, and go to Processes. Thats how many programs you are running at once.

Having 2 cores will mean the work is split between the two.

Exactly, the architecture of the Core 2 Duos is such that even at lower clock speeds, they will outperform the older architectures. I think even the slowest Core 2 Duos will outperform the fastest Pentium 4s.
