little or no conectivity problem

ok so i have a router, but im trying not to use it cause it causes my connection to go slower, but every time i disconect my internet from it and just plug it in to my pc i get a little or no connectivity bubble pop up,
i use to know how to change it so it doesnt do this but i forgot lol. sorry for the noobness but can any 1 refresh my memory on how to do this..

Probably using a APIPA address. You might have to go into the connection properties and assign a static IP Address?
