Laptop hard drive crapped out

The hard drive in my Gateway notebook recently decided to stop doing it's job. Basically XP doesn't boot and the hard drive makes this clicking sound. I know it's shot but I was wondering first of all why this may have happened and if there's anything I can do to prevent it from occurring on later notebooks. Secondly and more importantly, is there a way for me to get the information from that harddrive and move it to another hard drive? I have tons of important stuff on this drive. Thanks.

TBH there isnt any particular reason why hardrives break obviously if the laptop is roughlt treated then it will lead to it.

also try not to move your laptop about too much while its on as the hardrives are 10 X easier to break while spinning.

you could try putting the lapotop hardrive in an adapter into a desktop computer and hope it spins long enough to get a few files off of it but i wouldnt hold your breath.

short of sending it to a specialist i dont see you getting your stuff back TBH.

not to rub it in or anything but it is always worth getting an external hardrive to back stull up onto eve if you jus get 1 for like £50 or $100 it may be alot or a little money to you but i would say short of CPU, RAM, Motherboard that is the next important thing IMO

yeah I'm planning on doing the external backup thing. Do you know of any good places I can send it off to that would be able to get the stuff back for me? Thanks for replying, I was getting worried no one would help at all.

hey before u throw it out
if u want a chance of recovering files throw it in the freezer for 48 hours no joke
and it should work for about 20 min
cuz the cold temp makes the metal contract

uhh...is there absolutely no alternative? money isn't an issue, i HAVE to get the stored information back. if i do have to resort to the freezer thing, can that be done multiple times, cause theres no way i can get everything back in 20 minutes?

there really isnt it can be done multiple times
ive done it 3 times in a row to get info of my friends
just have an external ready and just go fast as u can
and pray, just pray

oh and if i was u id have a large external and constantly back up my info

alright thanks man, i guess i got nothing to lose. the laptop hard drive will work in the freezer method for sure?

not guaranteeing any thing but ive seen it work
throw it in there (make sure theres no condensation!!!!!)
48 hours pop it strait into your laptop with an external on hand and give it a try

the only reason I'm even considering trying this is because i dont see any other options. ppl always say stuff like this in forums but this forum has always tried its best to help so i;m inclined to believe you.

its not fool proof but its the only option you really got
give it a try its not going to damage the hard drive any more then it is
