Their's always a better router than the one you have.

For Network cable, Any cat5E or cat6 (better idea if you plan on running gigabit) will do.

is Cat6 that much better? Not to throw you off topic, but we are networking our whole house with a 24port 10/100/1000 switch and we were planning on cat5e but is cat6 that much better? We will have a media server and all that.
