odd dell mem thing?

Well take that 1gb stick out and see what happens , if it still shows 1gb chances are the other 1GB is integrated into the mobo , Otherwise have a look under in some other places like under the keyboard etc

hey....i figured it out...there is a gig under the keyboard as well...that is weird

Nope but i have had laptops with ram integrated on the Mobo
I would just take the 1gb stick out and try booting the laptop , if there is still 1 gb obviously one of the GB's is integrated into the mobo
