im not sure if the actual torrent is classed as illegal or just the files (i think both)

I'm certain the Torrent protocol is legal (clients and stuff) because you can still find legal items on torrent sites. A good example are several distros of Linux, such as Ubuntu Studio, Damn Small Linuix, etc..... However, movies, music, TV shows, any other copyrighted material are illegal.

yea. thats how they get away with it. they claim it should only be used for legal stuff but they know perfectly well what we use it for, but this covers their backs. otherwise they would be shut down

A good torrent client for mac is xtorrent I think. If you can't find that then get Tomato Torrent.
