2 Computers on a network and then suddenly different addresses

you probably can't access the internet because your default gateway needs to be assign to your router. So for your default gateway set it to the ip of your router. I think you said it was 192.168.1.1

Basicly you should have the ip set like this
Computer 1
IP Address: 192.168.1.200
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Computer 2
IP Address: 192.168.1.201
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Also you can set a prefered dns to your router and it will figure itself out
so
Prefered DNS: 192.168.1.1

Well, thanks for the effort. However, yet again, I lose internet connection and still cannot see the other computer.

I'm stumped by this. I really don't have a clue as to what is wrong, why it went wrong or how to fix it.

Any last thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I notice that the DNS servers are completely different here, apart from the other differences noted elsewhere in this thread. Might this be it?

You say that computer 1 is connected to computer 2, so it sounds to me like your using internet connection sharing. You have a router so this isnt necessary. Connect both computers to the router via ethernet cables and then it should be fine.

Would do, except we use VOIP and need the router (My apologies, I forgot to add that bit of detail in there... we have a motorola voip box sitting between the router and modem.)

Ok so your going to have to use ICS then. Give the troubleshooter a go and let me know what happens, its normally good.
1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
2. Under Pick a Help Topic, click Fixing a problem.
3. In the left pane, click Networking problems.
4. In the right pane, click Internet Connection Sharing Troubleshooter and follow the instructions.

why not move the VOIP box to after the router. So you would have the modem plugged into the wan port on the router and then the two computers and the voip box plugged into the router.
