I just got to college and the school has a network for the internet. Are they able to track what I'm doing? Can they see the sites that I go on?

Yes of course, they can.

They can track you by displaying lists of keywords (Such as MySpace), bandwidth usage (Abnormally large amount of bandwidth usage), and other various methods.

It's all how you go about using their internet. To say the least they aren't looking for you, but they do have you monitored.

That is, if they have a decent networking staff.

Yes, we can track every single detail of what you are doing. Unless you're using encryption of course, but that sets off a few alarms.

At my school you where cool as long as you didnt try and get on anything that would be obviously noticed such as porn . If we where playing games etc we where fine . They didnt bother going through all the logs they just searched for keywords like porn so you where unlucky if you got caght for games . Obviously if you where downloading large ammounts they would have a word as well

"We"? I don't know which software you use, but could you track me if I KVM into one of my machines (not on your network) and then use the web from there?

Theoretically you could do something like monitor the video from your session (if it's on a school owned pc that would have remote monitoring). However, using remote control like that would bypass filtering.

However, alot of places block remote control software (Logmein, VNC, Remote Desktop, etc)

You're not serious are you? Of course, they can track you down and know what sites you are visiting. The admin can see everything you're doing for starters. Also, by *simply sniffing network traffic* he knows exactly what you're doing, what you're viewing and what you are typing on this website for an example. ;)

Also.. do anything illegal on a *schools network* thats usually a good way to get expelled from school and possibly even having a forensic investigation. A little FYI You can sometimes use a web based proxy to bypass 'restrictions' to certain sites, however he will still be able to tell what you're doing. Unless you use TOR that encrypts all data using SSL but trying to use TOR on a schools network usually wont work. Applications like websense, snort etc... can easily detect the moment someone fires up the TOR protocol.

You would be ill advised to try anything illegal on an academic network, believe me. The security is there but it is extremely transparent, we can monitor your web activity by channelling everything through a gateway or proxy before it reaches the outside world, and we can carry out auditing of your file space as well. It is also not unheard of for connections to outside VPNs being totally disabled as this is a way to get round restrictions and gives the administrators no way of controlling what passes through it.

Usually, going over the disk storage quota set via AD or similar system will set the alarm bells ringing as well, and there are often unannounced spot checks carried out on users' workspaces. I remember a friend of mine on a placement caught somebody who had downloaded something like 2GB of MP3s and was storing them on the company's fileservers. I believe that individual was put on a formal warning with immediate sacking should anything else have happened.

Yeah, Dont f*c* with the system. I found out the school's IP, and got threatened with suspention ¬_¬
