Best CPU For My MoBo

I recently got some RAM and a GFX card for my 3-4 year old computer to make it run smoother for gaming. It seemed to have worked, but I'm starting to think the old CPU is bottlenecking the newer parts.
Right now, here is my setup:
-AMD Athalon 2800+ 2.08GHz (Old)
-1024 MB DDR RAM (New)
-NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 128 MB GFX Card (New)
-A7N8X-LA ASUSTEK With nForce2 chipset (I'm kinda new on MOBOs, so if it's not enough info, I can post the CPU-Z screen shot of it.)
All I really need to know is what, if any, CPU better than the one I got can I put in with my current setup, and would it be worth it to put this new CPU in, if I'm planning to build a new computer soon, or if it would be better to save my money and wait till then. Also, it would be helpful to know how much better a CPU would run compared to my current one.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd wait until you can buy a new rig.
That motherboard just doesn't give you enough headroom for buying a decent CPU that betters your old one.

This is what it supports:
Socket A for AMD® Athlon™ XP/ Athlon™/ Duron™ 600MHz - 2.8GHz+

You could buy a new motherboard, and get a much better CPU, which will be more worthwhile, for example a dual core X2 AMD, or an Intel Core 2 DUO.

The problems though start occuring here. For example, your new graphics card.

You see, your new video card is AGP only, which would limit your options when buying a new motherboard, since new motherboards now opt for PCI Express for graphics, though there are some AGP motherboards still around.

Your new memory would set you back the most though, since its only SD-RAM, which is very behind the times now, as new motherboards and also fairly old ones I'm afraid, opt for DDR RAM which is a faster alternative.

By a new system, what do you mean? Would you want to port the graphics/memory over to it?

If so, your options are limited I'm afraid

I got the GFX and RAM for free from a friend, and I used them because they were better than the integrated GFX and 512mb RAM my store bought comp had before. I would probably just leave all the parts to my current computer and just build a new one from the ground up.
I kinda guessed I wouldn't have been able to upgrade my current one that much. BTW I'm probably going to go with the AMD X2 Dual... Once I get my setup I'll post it on the forum and see how it looks.

Hmm, if you wouldn't mind going the route to Intel, the Core 2 DUO's blow the X2's away in performance/price.

Haha! The CPU is nowhere to bottleneck the system! My Athlon 1333MHZ plays UT2004 without any problems, running with a Geforce 4 MX4000. Your problem comes from the FX5500. You see, this card is a preety slow card for gaming. You could have gotten a 6200 or maybe a 6600GT for ultimate speed.

I'm mainly building the computer for gaming, and AMD seems to be the pick for gaming. Here is what I have so far:

Do those look like reasonably priced parts, or could I upgrade them for a little extra? Also, do they all work smoothly together?
