This might sound like a stupid question but installing a new processor, as long as it has the same socket number as the last one will it be compatible? For example is it possible to remove a 775 skt Pentium 4 and replace it with a Core 2 or Pentium D? Or would I need to check the motherboard model for compatibility issues.

yeah youd need to check the FSB speed.

and check if your mobo supports dual cores.

if you dont have your motherboard model then get it from everest home edtition.

post it here and ill be happy to tell u the range of processors you can get

Thanks but I have not actuallly got it yet. I've been looking at new motherboards, but I thought it was strange when some said they were 775 but only supported a p4. At the moment I have a 478 Celeron 2.66GHZ trying to run vista ultimate, thats why I need a new motherboard and processor.

yeah if u wonna run vista u gonna need something with a bit more power.

aslo if its socket 478 i thinm u have DDR RAM and if you want a C2D board ur gonna wnat to get DDR2 on it aswell.

so im afraid new RAM for u,

there are boards that support both DDR and DDR2 RAM so u cud stiuck with DDR for now then upgrade later.

if u have a budget ill suggest a few parts if u want

Yes could you please. I don't have a fixed budget but cant't spend loads. It doesn't have to be a C2D, a pentium d would probably be fine, also I know it old but would a P4 HT be any good with vista.

TBH mate for the price diff between pentium D and P4 u might as well get the P D i know u said u dont have alot for a budget but how much we talking here ?

are you uk or us?

uk u could get a mobo and processor for under £100 probably less

so i guess us its probably abaout $180

so whats your budget ?

£60 -£80 / £80 - £100 / £100 - £120 ?
or
$100-$140 / $140 - $180 / $180 - $240 ?

i mean i could give u examples of all 3 ?

where u from ?

right ill give you a few options then.

Asus Motherboard : £32
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/123837

Processor : £79
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/127326

RAM : £50
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106132

that would be your complete setup to run vista perfectly.

little overbudget but thats all you need so jus a processor and upgrade RAM later then.

Motherboard : £37
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/124950

Processor : £79
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/127326

thats at the lower end of your budget and that motherboard can take your old RAM and u can upgrade to DDR2 later.

or with that second option you could have this processor

£106 : http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/112708

now you would not be able to use the full potential of any C2D until you get DDR2 but they will run with each oother untiul you upgrade.

personally id go for option 1 as it will completely set u up for windows vista
