Well yes, hardware has a lifespan just like anything else..
It could have expired, in which case you'd need to replace it.

Try switching out the IDE cables first, and if it doesn't work with a new IDE cable, its likely the drive.

I'm curious on how you would go about burning a CD/DVD on a DVD ROM drive. I'm aware you can burn on CD-RW and DVD-/+RW drives, but not ROM...
