Always best to back up cause if it fails you will be right stuffed, I have to admit it doesnt sound good if the hard drive is clicking it would certainly ring alarm bells if it was my computer. :)

Eh you could just get a new hard drive and set the hard drive you have right now to a slave drive meaning that its a secondary drive and transfer your stuff from the old hard drive to the new one

Wow alot of reply's for this when i ask i only get like.. 2(which im greatful that i even get 2 lol)..

All you have to worry is that the external fails
Hah, yeah which for a external you get no warning!(right? em i currect?)

Glory to Flash disks.
I agree with lhuser, get a cheap USB flash drive. You can get then for pretty cheap, I'm I'm pretty sure a 1 or 2 GB one will hold all your important files

What's the biggest a USB flash can hold, can you get 40GB? Im after a external HD for myself:D

well for usb drives you can get 16gb http://www.ocztechnology.com/produc...m-large_capacity_mega_kart_usb_2_0_flash_card

but there are also solid state hard drives which samsung are releasing 64gb models later this year http://news.digitaltrends.com/news/story/12556/samsung_announces_64_gb_solid_state_drive

And a data are also planning a 128gb model of solid state storage drives for laptops http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripher...-state-drive-sees-the-light-of-day-231693.php . ALthough i would be posible to buy an enclosure and put them into an enclosure and use them as external

^ Thanks Muz, i hope the rep worked, the forum is being ... well you know, and it say's i cannot give you rep for the same post(wtf..)
So to clear it up i gave you pos + rep, if it worked!

^Looks good, even if it's 16GB, i could see how that goes(cant belive how freaking small the flashies are lol..)

solid state hard drives
Do you mean the shell/case's external HD? Like seagate(etc)

Perhaps they like me.......lol:) [joke]
Per-haps you are right :D

Yep i got the rep thanks .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Open_HDD_and_SSD.JPG the one on the left is a traditional hard drive with a disk that spins round . The one next to it is a solid state hard drive .That means there are no moving parts used in the storage such as motors which can go bad . Instead the data is stored on flash memory .similar to on a flash drive but on a much larger scale .They are mainly for laptops tho at the moment because a lot of hard drive failures in notebooks occur because they are moved about and this can cause damage whilst the disk is spinning and so if there are no mving parts less can go wrong -At the moment tho solid state hard drives are expensive
Solid state

As for an enclosure it is just a small box that you put the hard drive in so you can use an internal hard drive as an external .

Wait on, your left or my left?

You know your stuff! I did'nt know that..
That's interesting about the laptop's though, and that's very handy if you have a laptop if that is the case(solid HD)

Yeah and so they would be dear if they work like that, hopefully they go down within the next year at least(HD's are getting cheap as it is now so hope.)

Yeah, i want to do that, that's in the works for me(wanting to put an external in the pc and vice versa')
