"Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows could not start" error messages when you start your computer

That's the message. Now, I heard you can rebuild this file with notepad. If it's that simple, I could just put that into my folder and windows could possibly boot correctly. Sad thing is... I don't remember the steps to do that.

A repair install will fix that, but you need your XP CD. Instructions below:

XP Repair install

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Sigh... you don't really pay attention do you?

1. I don't have a bootable CD and I don't have anything to make one as stated in the first post. Therefore that method is not possible.
2. You got that from microsoft's website which I have already seen. Thanks for trying though.

well, the problem seems to be with the cd. So go and get a decent win xp cd from somewhere. Can't be that hard, ask friends etc, someone has to have the cd. Then just find a working cd-key.
Or do it the easy way and buy a Win Xp cd.

And you can also install linux first and then windows, but you will need to reinstall GRUB.

A Blue Screen of Death usually refers to a hardware malfunction, not something that can be remedied by uninstalling and reinstalling an Operating System.

I might be wrong though.

well sometimes. But it can also happen because of stuff like driver problems.
