hi there i am a little confused by something

i am buying a new motherboard and am trying to choose between

ASUS P5PL2-E i945PL SKT LGA775 Serial ATA-300 6 Channel High Definition Audio ATX

found here:http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126198

and
Asus P5L Socket 775 I945p onboard audio Fsb1066 SATA ATX

found here:
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/117636

i have pretty much settled on the second board (Asus P5L Socket 775 I945p onboard audio Fsb1066 SATA ATX) but i am worried that the processor socket seems to have a dark plastic cover on it, my old board, and the first asus here have a metal thing which the processor sits in and is exposed through, making contact with the bottom of the fan (with thermal paste inbetween).

does anybody know why it has a plastic top and how i would apply thermal paste to the top of the processor and the bottom of the fan, or does it come off?

thanks in advance

That plastic thing is just to protect the pins on the motherboard while it's not being used. you take that off right before you install the processor.
