Yes, it's possible. I've heard it's also possible for some advanced viruses to switch between partitions, although I'm not sure if that's actually true or not.

IM assuming he might 'possibly' be infected with some variant of a worm/virus.

Boot sector viruses can also erase the computers CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor)

Thats the point. If a virus or worm is written to attack or over write the CMOS or the BIOS it 'usually' makes the system 'completely useless'.

What makes you think you have something like this on your system in the first place? Is it acting funny? Doing weird things anything like that?
