I'd just like to point out how much of an annoyance it is that memory prices have gone down by half in just under a year! That's unbelievable ..


So anyway, I was thinking of buying an additional gb of memory, thinking it'd cost me around £80 (sorry for currency) @ 800Mhz, dual channel. It is actually £50 .. they're also doing 2gb (1x2) dual channel @ same speeds for £70 (as an offer for that week) and the other offer being 2gb (1x2) @ 8500c5 (1000MHz) for £100 .. which is pretty decent.

My current memory is the one I was aiming to get at the start .. however would it be much advisable to get one of the offers? 3gb isn't really necessary is it? If so, which of the offers to get? They're both the same except one @ 800MHz and the oter @ 1000MHz, dual.

If I got the 1000MHz one, wouldn't it slow itself down to 800MHz simply because of the already installed 800Mhz one?

Depending on your budget, i would suggest getting another matching 1GB for £50 as 2Gb is about the sweet spot right now for gaming and apps. But for only £20 more, another 2GB would be a great deal.

You are correct in that the 1000MHz memory would be held back to 800MHz if installed with your current memory.

I see .. yeah I was going to go for just the 1gb but would 3gb of memory for just £20 see a decent difference?

well if you are using win xp 2gb should be enough for almost anything.
But it's a really good question, I'd probably just get 1gb more since I never want to spend a lot of money and I know it would be enough for some time.
But getting 2gb more would make it more future proof, from what I've heard vista likes to eat a lot of ram.

But it's really up to you, 2gb should be enough for quite a long time, but having more ram is never a bad thing, and £70 for 2gb seems like a good deal.
