least resource using IMing program

Pidgin (formally gaim) is an open source client compatible with the AIM protocol as well as others MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, IRC, ICQ...

Not sure how much "less" resource intensive it'd be. Could be a valid solution though, so check it out. http://pidgin.im/pidgin/home/

Well, it isn't really LESS resource intensive, if you are talking about mem usage. However, it boots up faster, and you can use multiple messengers with it, that is what I like about it.

Well one could argue it's less intensive. If you ran Yahoo, MSN, AIM, or other clients alone instead of having a central client that handles them all you'd be using a lot more resources.

Also you don't have the ads, or the unnecessary features (1000 different smiley faces ect). But you also have the option to plug-in features you want too.

Eithe way, I guess it's really up to the user as it's their preference.
