I want an OS I can boot from a CD onto any computer (just windows, but it'll be on all windows from 95 to server '03 to vista). I was thinking Linux, but there are so many choices and I cant seem to get it to boot from a CD. I burned an ISO of Knoppix using Nero 7, but it refused to boot, it just paused for a second then went to windows (CD-ROM is set at the top in BIOS). By the way, I am VERY new to Linux (I started this morning) so please bare with me. I mainly want it to diagnos and repair a corrupted system.

I would also like a small arsenal of programs to help me on my journey, all standalone if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yeah kubuntu is a good choise.
As for the problem with getting it to boot, you need to burn it as a image. Nero 7 does have that option somewhere.
