Installing a new hard drive into a laptop

I replaced my Dell Inspiron 600m's hard drive with a brand new one and for whatever reason, the system is not recognizing the new drive and indicates that no hard drive is detectable. Do I need to do anything with my laptop's BIOS to have it recognize the new HDD or should it recognize automatically? I appreciate any help... Thanks.

It's a Dell, maybe it has to be done by them. Because that's how dell sucks now, in canada at least.

Guys, I feel like an idiot. I did not know to put the adapter of the old hard drive onto the new prior to installation. You can tell it was the first time I've replaced a hard drive. Thanks for your responses and have a great weekend!
