Itanium Problems!!!

Does anybody know if intel are going to be making more Itanium processors?

And also will windows 2008 run on Itaniums, or not?

I am asking this because we are going to be replacing our AMD Opteron servers soon ( Opterons ARE USELESS COMPARED TO XEONS ), and we want to know what the best cpu options are, we need to replace pretty much all of our servers.

At the moment all our DATABASE + EAXHANGE SERVERS have 32 opterons each, but they are too slow, so we are wondering what itaniums would be like, otherwise xeons will be fine

2008 does run on itaniums

Itaniums will run on Server 2008. They are 64-bit only though. If you plan to use 32-bit, then you need Xeons. The Itaniums are 64-bit, as the drawback, but they're fast.

We already use 64 bit anyway so it is no problem

Itaniums are more expensive and powerful as i thought lol

My boss just ordered 12 HP Integrity High-End Superdomes, 64 ITANIUM CPUS !!!!! and 512GB of RAM!!!!!

Now i just got to wait for windows 2008 so i can use these brand new servers

We already use 64 bit anyway so it is no problem

Itaniums are more expensive and powerful as i thought lol

My boss just ordered 12 HP Integrity High-End Superdomes, 64 ITANIUM CPUS !!!!! and 512GB of RAM!!!!!

Now i just got to wait for windows 2008 so i can use these brand new servers

Damn never even heard of ITANIUM processors lol.

They've been around for years, as in, they must be about 10 years old. Obviously, just like pentiums, they evolve over time. Itainiums are good only in milti-CPU setups, and they are not based on x86/x86_64 instruction sets. They have thier own instruction set, something like AI_64 or summint like that. Anyway, there completely useless for home use and as I said, mainly only for huge multi-CPU arrays for the most demanding servers running specialised software - such as huge databases or for being the platform for virtual servers.

They do have support for x86 applications but this in emulated, and not natively supported, so run terribly slow compared to an equivelently clocked x64 or x86 CPU. For example, when the P3's were out at about 1.2GHz, the Itainiums were running about 1.2GHz as well, but when running x86 software, performed like P2's 266MHz. Not good.

There for specialised use only. Not for us, fortunately when you look at the price!
