what are sata raid for?

PATA is just like SATA expect slower and bulkier cables and PATA raid is very uncommon but it does exist

My two 250GB hard discs are setup in Raid 1 (mirroring). Can I uninstall this arrangement? I want to be able to again use each hard drive independently.

If so, how? And, by doing so, do I lose the apps and data on drive C:\?

They are mirrored, so you should just be able to pull out one hard drive and reconfigure the raid controller.

The entire point of RAID 1 is so that if a harddrive blows up and you loose it, nothing gets lost
